Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

This lecture will focus on strategies for improving sepsis recognition in children including the development of a vital sign based electronic alert, human factors, as well as existing and novel biomarkers.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the thought process behind the development of an electronic sepsis screening program at a large academic pediatric emergency department
  2. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of this recognition strategy and discuss which components are the leading drivers of improved outcomes
  3. Discuss emerging strategies for augmenting these processes in the future including machine learning, human factors, and biomarker based approaches
