  • Identify malnutrition as a risk factor in preoperative patients
  • Understand the differences between simple and stress-related malnutrition
  • Define the new standardized identification of malnutrition, the Global Leaders Initiatives in Malnutrition, or GLIM criteria. 
  • Understand that serum albumin levels as such have low predictive scores for identification of malnutrition
  • List the various components of preop nutritional and metabolic assessment
  • Utilize oral nutritional supplements as part of pre-operative preparation, appreciate concepts of PRE-habilitation. 
  • Express the importance of suggesting disease codes (ICD) in nutrition consultations
  • Create system-wide changes to address malnutrition throughout the continuum of care: Prehospitalization to Post-discharge
  • Explain the Nutrition Focused physical Exam and the areas of focus

Target Audience:
Physicians: primary care, internal medicine, family medicine, surgeons, all specialties referring to surgery, anesthesiology.  Nurses: pre-surgical testing, pre-op, surgical, post-op.  Other providers: physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietitians and other interested professionals.
