Core Competency in Pain Assessment: Addiction and Pain Management

Target Audience

Those who work in Aurora Pain Clinics, including Physicians, PA’s, Psychologists, NP’s, Psychiatrists, EM, FM, Social Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational experience, the participant will be able to demonstrate expertise in:

  1. The terms regarding addiction, including commonly misused terms that have nothing to do with addiction.
  2. The physiologic basis for how addiction develops, esp. the VTA and Nucleus Accumbens
  3. How to compile an opioid abuse risk assessment
  4. How to grade opioids for their varying levels of addictive potential
  5. How to optimally deal with aberrant behaviors of opioid-seeking patients
  6. How to handle notifications that patients are diverting their drugs.
