Creating a Safe Space for LGBTQIA Patients and Team Members

The speaker will provide tips for creating a safe space for patients who identify as LGBTQIA.  The lecture will discuss the differences in sexual orientation, sexual identity, and birth identity for all, especially focusing on transgendered individuals.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all Advocate Aurora Health MDs and Team Members that provide direct patient care and leadership.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to: 

  • Design a safe space for open dialogue about bias, discrimination, and hate towards LGBTQIA? in the health care setting
  • Discuss recent incidents of bias in the workplace and impact on emotions, feelings, and work environment
  • Define strategies a clinician or team member can use to address LGBTQIA individuals to make the hospital environment more welcoming and affirming. 
  • Utilize and co-create short-term anti-hate strategies

Desired Learner Outcome

Using a Likert scale, after participating in this event, learners will have an increased knowledge in creating open dialogue about bias, discrimination and hate towards LGBTQIA, and have an increased knowledge in defining strategies a team member can use to address LGBTQIA individuals to make the environment more welcoming.
