Ethics: Working with Trauma: Clinical, Legal, and Ethical Considerations

This ethics workshop examines the clinical, legal, and ethical considerations when working with patients who have experienced trauma.  Attendees will engage in a learning experience that provides strategies and tools to use in therapy to ethically treat the traumatized patient.

Target Audience

The program is aimed at psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and other allied health professionals who deal with mental health issues and addiction medicine.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the added impact of trauma on several common and ethical situations
  2. List three ways that history of trauma exposure impacts clinical work with children and adolescents and also with adults
  3. Identify common factors that increase risk of legal or disciplinary involvement when working with traumatized patients
  4. Explain strategies for addressing and minimizing risk when working in integrated care settings
  5. recognize the impact of vicarious traumatization and importance of self-care
