Neurocognitive Development in Complex Congenital Heart Disease

This course will discuss patients with complex congenital heart disease may be doing well during their school age years. However most pediatricians may not be aware of their high risk for neurocognitive disorders, especially executive function disorders, because IQ can be normal. Neurocognitive disorders are a major cause of poor school performance and poor personal interactions in these patients. Studies show that most of these patients do not receive the proper therapies.

Target Audience

This course is intended for all physicians and specifically for Pediatricians , fellows, residents, nurses, and medical students

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the neurocognitive challenges children with complex congenital heart disease face
  2. Recognize that survivors of neonatal heart surgery are at risk for neurocognitive delay at any point in their life
  3. Describe the brain changes that occur in children with complex congenital heart surgery
