Principles of Financial Therapy: Engaging Couples and Families into the Conversation about Money and Emotions

This conference includes two dates: Wednesday 1/18 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm and Wednesday 1/25 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm. You must attend both dates to receive full credit.

The purpose of this seminar is to equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills needed to utilize principles of Financial Therapy in clinical practice. Wendy Wright, LMFT, is a Financial Therapist, trained money coach, and has developed 10 Principles of Financial Therapy© She is also a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and author of The Intersection of Money and Milkshakes©.  Wendy will review principles in this seminar, and will utilize didactic & experiential learning to enhance participant awareness, reflection, competency, and integration.  Participants will learn how to explore the intersection of money and emotions for themselves and their clients.  Participants will learn the role of financial therapy and how to stay within the scope of practice of a therapist when discussing financial issues/impacts.

Target Audience

This course is intended for mental health practitioners, including physicians, marriage and family therapists, social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Define the differences and similarities between a financial advocate, counselor, and therapist.
  2. Learn how to assess and discuss: a) common personal blocks around money that clients experience (beliefs, family of origina patterns, trauma), b) how those blocks interact with mental health difficulties, c) the impact of these intersections on their relationships
  3. Identify and role play through some systemic interventions to address the above.
