Strokes and EMS Prehospital Care

Understanding the different types of strokes and what can be accomplished in the prehospital setting is important to the successful treatment and outcome of a stroke patient. Understanding the warning signs and appropriate treatment as well as the important, chronological steps to be taken for a stroke patient is important. 

Target Audience

This course is intended for those licensed at the EMR level through Paramedic. This course satisfies the requirements for the State of Wisconsin EMT Flexible Refresher Renewal.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand and recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke
  2. Understand the common terminology utilized in referencing a stroke patient
  3. Understand prehospital treatment for a suspected stroke patient
  4. Early notification of the hospital regarding a possible neurological event
  5. Making the decision to call a neuro alert
  6. Hospital course for the stroke patient
  7. Understand the importance of obtaining the last known well time
  8. Describe the various types of strokes and their etiology
  9. Discuss and understand the therapeutic window for thrombolytic therapy in a stroke patient
