2020 Third Quarter Education - Trauma and Prehospital Care

Prehospital care provided by EMS is important on several different levels. Providing consistent quality care is of the utmost importance, no matter what level of certification or training and individual has. For trauma care, basic skills are of the utmost importance which include, but are not limited to airway, breathing and circulation. Working together as a team provides our patients, in the prehospital setting, with the best quality care.

Target Audience

This course is intended for those licensed at the EMR level through Paramedic. This course satisfies the requirements for the State of Wisconsin EMT Flexible Refresher Renewal.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1.  Discuss the ongoing assessment and acute management of the critically injured trauma patient
  2.  Discuss the importance of past medical history and current medications as it relates to patient assessment and management. Discuss specifically how this pertains to the elderly trauma patient.
  3.  State how EMS acquires and transmits information about the critically ill patient in order to make appropriate decisions about the patient's care as well as keeping other team members informed
  4.  Discuss how the assessment strategies and therapeutic interventions used in the critical care setting can be applied in the care of the injured patient in the field
  5.  Explain the various treatments and medications administered to the critically injured trauma patient
  6.  Assist with a physical assessment on the trauma patient and discuss the interpretation of the assessment 

e care of the injured patient in the field.
