ForwardWisconsin Medical Examining Board How to Talk to Patients about Opioids
This course meets the 2020 - 2021 WI MEB Opioid education requirements.
This program will provide the participant with guidance on how to discuss opioids with two distinct groups; reasonable patients and patients who are drug-seeking. It will cover the research underlying why it is desirable to convince even patients without evidence of nascent addiction to get off opioids. It will also cover how to set appropriate boundaries with patients who demonstrate manipulative behavior in attempting to convince the provider to prescribe opioids. It will also provide suggested scripts for how to frame these discussions.
Target Audience
This course is intended for any provider with a DEA license to provide prescriptions for controlled substances; particularly those who prescribe opioids to a significant number of patients.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, learners should be able to:
- Discuss the research underlying the extremely poor risk/benefit ratio of opioids.
- Effectively and understandably discuss the role of opioids with reasonable patients; why they should not be started for chronic pain, and why patients on them already should consider weaning off of them.
- Effectively but compassionately set appropriate boundaries with patients attempting to manipulate them in to prescribing more opioids than deemed appropriate for that patient, and guide them into an addiction evaluation if indicated.
