Couples and Sexual Infidelity: Healing After an Affair

Milwaukee, WI US
April 8, 2022

In the past 30 years, little scientific work has done on affairs both emotional and physical. In 1991 Peggy Vaughan wrote the "Monogamy Myth" describing her own personal experience of affairs and successful recovery plus providing some sound qualitative research of affairs and the aftermath. Shirley Glass and Thomas Wright provided understanding of role of attitudes, behavior and gender in relationship betrayal and how to protect your relationship in her book "NOT just Friends " (2003). An John Gottman who has written numerous article describing the predictors of divorce, describe in his book "The Science of Trust" (2011)  and "What makes Love Lastl" (2013) how betrayal occurs and how to build back trust.

This workshop will provide a brief overview of this research and focus on how couples therapy can address couple who choose to continue their relationship after sexual or emotional affair.  In the second section, the presenter will provide examples of how he uses the attune-attone-attach model to guide couples in rebuilding trust through fearless honest, emotional attunement and heartfelt love.
