Keen on Ketamine: A Review of Off-label Uses of Ketamine in the Emergency Department

This presentation will discuss recent literature updates with the use of ketamine in patients with agitation/psychosis, refractory status epilepticus, and status asthmaticus, as well as ketamine use in special populations (e.g., pregnancy and acute illicit substance use patients) in the setting of the emergency department.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to

  • Recognize the pharmacology of ketamine
  • Evaluate recent literature supporting ketamine use for off-label indications including agitation/psychosis, status epilepticus, and status asthmaticus
  • Propose ketamine dosing strategies for off-label indications including agitation/psychosis, status epilepticus, and status asthmaticus if given a patient case
  • Develop a plan for use of ketamine in special populations including women who are pregnant and acute illicit substance use patients​​
