The Pain Consult: Alternative Strategies for Pain Management in Palliative and Hospice Care Patients

With the current opioid crisis and goals of care unique to the palliative and hospice care setting, alternative strategies for pain management are essential. During this presentation, we evaluate alternative pharmacological treatment options beyond the standard of care to improve patients' quality of life.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to

  • Review the current landscape of pain assessment and treatment in Hospice and Palliative care.
  • Analyze the utility of methadone, buprenorphine, low-dose naltrexone, and ketamine within hospice and palliative care settings.
  • Outline methadone, buprenorphine, and low-dose naltrexone opioid rotation strategies.
  • Prepare hospice and palliative patient-specific recommendations for the safe use of methadone, buprenorphine, and low-dose naltrexone.
