Ethics - Competence and Scope of Practice

August 12, 2020

This conference is being held virtually.

This presentation will explore the ethics and practice issues related to issues and ethical dilemmas which arise in inter-disciplinary health care as mental health and substance use disorders are identified, diagnosed and treated in today’s evolving healthcare field. Although the field has accepted hard earned credentials as establishing competence, little evidence has been established to address the clinical scope of practice in the delivery of mental health services. This creates issues where a credentialled provider may be perceived by themselves or other stakeholders as lacking a degree of preparedness and challenges in evaluating clinician competence.

Target Audience

This course is intended for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other allied health professionals who deal with mental health issues and addiction medicine.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Investigate varying strategies to define the concepts of competence and scope of practice
  2. Analyze ethical issues which arise when competence and scope of clinical practice are poorly defined
  3. Identify different models to integrate into clinical supervision to provide increase clinician competence
