Screening and Treating Major Depressive Disorder in Primary Care
Depression is one of the leading causes of disability in persons 15 years and older. It affects individuals, but can impact families, businesses, and society. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that all adults be screened for depression because If only those showing symptoms were screened a significant proportion of individuals who do not display or disclose symptoms would be missed.
Because depression is commonly co-occurring with cardiac disease, diabetes and cancer, primary care practitioners are often the frontline providers of behavioral health care.
Primary care clinics can be busy and clinicians are often pressed for time so this course was designed to assist clinicians in screening patients effectively and efficiently. In addition to information, we provide tools and a list of resources to help implement a team based collaborative approach to help patients with depression live well. The goal of this course is to help you identify and treat patients with depression. You will be completing this activity in 3 stages during which you will pause the course to apply what you have learned and then report back. This 3 Stages include:
- Stage A: Complete self-assessment and set goals for improvement
- Stage B: Watch 30 minute video, complete 2 improvement cycles (4 weeks each), and reflect on your project
- Stage C: Complete self-assessment and reflect on your project
Target Audience
The audience for this course includes primary care physicians, residents, PAs, and advanced practice clinicians.
