Human Values Forum

The Human Values Forum was organized in May 1979 to discuss and respond to the value concerns that confront and impact the delivery of health care on a daily basis.  Throughout the years, it has served as a forum for dialogue, discussion and debate about values.  Its role has been consultative and deliberative, and it has sought to elicit, not impose, moral wisdom.  It has also sought to facilitate a consensus on values issues when possible, and to point out when and why such consensus is not possible.

This year we are offering two great sessions for Human Values:  (Un)Just Medicine: Is There a Cure? and Shocking Experiences: Physician as Patient.  Click on the Register tab or the image to learn more.

(Un)Just Medicine: Is There a Cure?

October 20, 2021

Implicit bias is the single most important determinant of health and health care disparities. Because we have missed this fact, the money we spend on training providers to become culturally competent, expanding wellness education programs and community health centers, and even expanding access to health insurance will have only a modest effect on reducing health disparities. Just Medicine author Dayna Bowen Matthew will illuminate these disparities and offer suggestions to enact strong, evidence-based legal remedies that accurately address implicit and unintentional forms of discrimination.

Shocking Experiences: Physician as Patient

October 27, 2021

Author Rana Awdish will describe her transition from doctor to patient who sees first-hand the impact of doctors’ language on their patients, and the impact of the mental barriers that they construct to protect themselves from their own emotions. Dr. Awdish will discuss her quest to improve training in emotional intelligence for all healthcare professions and offer suggestions to incorporate these ideas in medical training.
