Opioid Update: A Pediatric Perspective (Wisconsin Medical Examining Board)

This online education module will feature presentations by content experts regarding adolescent substance use disorder and neonatal abstinence syndrome.

This course meets the 2020 - 2021 WI MEB Opioid education requirements.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, allied health professionals, nurses, social workers, professional staff.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify the symptoms of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome
  2. Explain the impact of the NAS epidemic on national healthcare expenses, NICU hospital days, and foster care referrals
  3. Summarize conventional assessment and treatment of NAS including the use of the Finnegan scoring tool
  4. Contrast a proposed new scoring system (NAScore) and new treatment protocol (ESC) with conventional methods
  5. Critique neurodevelopmental outcome studies of NAS patients and give examples of confounding variables
  6. Discuss current substance abuse trends in adolescents in Wisconsin and the US and factors behind these trends
  7. Understand the differences between adolescent and adult substance users and how this impacts treatment and clinical decision making
  8. Identify common protective factors which decrease risk of teen substance use and risk factors which increase the risk of teen substance use
