Core Competency in Pain Assessment: NSAIDs and Antispasmodics

Target Audience

Those who work in Aurora Pain Clinics, including Physicians, PA’s, Psychologists, NP’s, Psychiatrists, EM, FM, Social Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational experience, the participant will be able to demonstrate expertise in:

  1. General approach to the use of pain medications
  2. Indications for NSAIDs
  3. Contraindications to NSAIDs
  4. Common ADRs to NSAIDs and their mechanism of action (for PUD and renal)
  5. Indications for gastroprotection if using a NSAID
  6. Which NSAIDs have relatively low cardiovascular risk
  7. NSAIDs and DVT risk
  8. Preferred muscle relaxants and appropriate dose ranges
  9. Muscle relaxants that should not be used, and why
  10. Why 1st generation muscle relaxants should be avoided
  11. The chemical class of cyclobenzaprine
  12. Meds that may help nocturnal leg cramps
