Breaking the 'H2RA' Barrier: No ‘Steroid'otypes Suggested in Managing Allergic Reactions

Current clinical practice for the management of allergic reactions involves the administration of epinephrine along with adjunctive agents such as corticosteroids, antihistamines, histamine-2 receptor antagonists, and bronchodilators. This presentation will review the updated European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) guidelines and recent literature - exploring the role and efficacy of histamine-2 receptor antagonists and corticosteroids in allergic reactions such as urticaria and anaphylaxis reactions.

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to

  • Differentiate among the different types of allergic reactions ​
  • Interpret the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) treatment guidelines for the definition, classification, diagnosis and management of urticaria
  • Evaluate current literature on the role and efficacy of corticosteroids and Histamine-2 Receptor Antagonists ​
  • Summarize strategies for prevention of urticaria and allergic reactions​​
