Clinical Issues in Marriage and Family Therapy Series: Caring for Postpartum Families

The postpartum period for a mother presents unique challenges that require compassionate, competent, and skilled clinical care. Unfortunately, the mental health concerns of the mother in the postpartum period often go unaddressed. This is due to a variety of factors, including lack of appropriate screening, diagnosis, and timely intervention.

Target Audience

This course is intended for mental health practitioners, including physicians, marriage and family therapists, social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify those at highest risk for developing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD’s) 
  2. Recognize appropriate screening tools to assess for diagnosis and severity
  3. Identify symptoms and differential diagnosis between most common PMAD’s 
  4. Explain the impact of breastfeeding and PMAD’s 
  5. Apply evidence-based treatment modalities and strategies for counseling in the postpartum period
  6. Discover the impact of postpartum mood disorders on partners and families, and how to establish support for families in distress
  7. Integrate the use of collaborative care with partners, families, and other care providers
