Prolonged Services (99358-99360)

This specific education module covers the guidelines for selecting the appropriate E/M code for prolonged services performed in the office, outpatient, inpatient and/or observation setting . Additionally, revisions to the 2023 coding guidelines along with coding and documentation concepts related to selecting the appropriate level of service based on time will be covered, including examples of how this applies in a clinical setting.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all AAH employed clinicians who provide services to patients in any patient care setting.

It is mandatory for all clinicians new to AAH and optional for existing employed Clinicians.

Learning Objectives

Overall Objectives:

  • Determine the Patient Type (New vs Established) and Setting of Service
  • Analyze Evaluation & Management (E/M) Documentation Guidelines
  • Distinguish the Three Key Components of an E/M visit 
  • Determine the appropriate level of service
  • Analyze general principles of E/M documentation
  • Identify the 2023 changes to the E/M service components: history, examination, and medical decision making
  • Distinguish the element of time and its relation to prolonged care coding 
  • Identify coding and documentation concepts for the Emergency Department, Office/Outpatient, Consultations, Inpatient and Observation, Critical Care, and Nursing Home settings.
  • Determine correct documentation and coding for Newborn Care, Birthing Room Services, and Inpatient Neonatal Care (including Critical Care)
  • Analyze Transitional Care Management and Advanced Care Planning guidelines
  • Recognize CMS (Medicare) Split/Shared and Incident to billing and documentation requirements
