Child Abuse and Child Safety
This course will provide insight and information regarding our jobs as EMTs and medical healthcare professionals regarding different things to watch for and how and when to report signs of possible child abuse and neglect.
Target Audience
This course is intended for those licensed at the EMR level through Paramedic. This course satisfies the requirements for the State of Wisconsin EMT Flexible Refresher Renewal.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, learners should be able to:
- As prehospital providers, you are generally the first people that a child will interact with when we are called to their home, school, etc., and many times we become investigators without knowing it
- It is important to understand the statistics of child abuse
- It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of child abuse
- It is important to understand that as healthcare professionals we are mandatory reporters for concerns regarding child abuse, or concerns regarding child abuse
- It is important to review this content frequently as our interaction with children is less frequent than adults and it is important to stay on top of the different signs and symptoms to watch for or be aware of in regard to child abuse
- It is imperative to have a high level of suspicion, especially because many of the children will not have the ability to provide any type of report to EMS or other healthcare professionals and we need to be aware of this
