Pediatric Sepsis (EMS only)
The focus of the fourth quarter, 2019 training session will include pediatric sepsis, early identification of sepsis (pre-hospital), what qualifies as sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock as well as the criteria for each, vital signs in pediatric septic patients, identifying mental status changes in pediatric septic patients, appropriate pre-hospital treatment of suspected sepsis, what can cause sepsis in pediatric patients, understand the clinical definition of sepsis, in-depth understanding of what happens to a pediatric patient when sepsis occurs physiologically.
Target Audience
This course is intended for those licensed at the EMR level through Paramedic. This course satisfies the requirements for the State of Wisconsin EMT Flexible Refresher Renewal.
Learning Objectives
- Complete an assessment of a pediatric patient utilizing the appropriate equipment for the scenario
- Discuss what are normal vital signs in a pediatric patient versus abnormal vital signs
- Demonstrate the ability to recognize shock in a pediatric patient
- Discuss what can place a pediatric patient at risk for sepsis
- Discuss the priority treatment for these patients (i.e. ABCD)
- Discuss the most accurate way to obtain a temperature on a pediatric patient
- Discuss the equipment to be utilized based off of the initial assessment and information provided
- Discuss the appropriate medications to be utilized for the patient
- Discuss the need for reassessment and further interventions
- Discuss the appropriate transport of the patient (emergent versus non-emergent) and the appropriate facility
- Discuss how things can be improved, i.e. involving the parents, looking for certain cues from family and/or the patient

AEMT - Obstetrics and Pediatrics 1.0 hour
Paramedic - Pediatric Sepsis 2.0 (additional quiz for Paramedics only)
